Column: Oklahoma’s big-time SEC move may have cost it the big-time coach

This column was published on the USC Annenberg Media website on November 30, 2021. Two days before publication, former Oklahoma Sooners head coach, Lincoln Riley, was hired as the new head football coach at the University of Southern California. After the firing of former USC head coach Clay Helton, the Trojan Athletic Department was determined to find the perfect fit. This move is what many will call a “home-run hire”. Oklahoma is a big time football program that had a very successful season this year and in years past. Why would a head coach like Lincoln Riley leave? Was it the fact that he could not turn down an opportunity to coach a program like USC in LA? Did the Sooners move to the SEC in the near future have an impact?
